The New Luxury Tax No One Asked For

Tariffs are driving up the cost of designer goods—here’s what that means for you.

Welcome back angels! January felt like it lasted a decade, but we made it! February is here, bringing travel, family time, and (hopefully) a little joy. But before we get into the fun stuff, let’s talk about the elephant in the room—tariffs.

If you’re tired of hearing about them, SAME. We learned in grade school that tariffs = bad, yet suddenly they’re being pitched as an economic win? No matter where you stand, no one wants to pay extra taxes. So today, we’re breaking down what these new tariffs mean for your designer shopping habits—and yes, even resale. 😢

Picture this 👀 :

  • It’s summer 2024—you flew to Paris, snagged your dream Chanel Flap from Rue Cambon, scored a juicy VAT refund, and waltzed through US customs without a second glance. No extra duties paid, no harm, no foul! Prefer shopping from your couch? The “de minimis rule” made it just as easy, letting retailers ship luxury goods straight to your door, tax-free and hassle-free.

  • It's the beginning of 2025—the de minimis rule is now under fire, and both shoppers and retailers are feeling the heat 😡 . Forget effortless, tax-free imports—whether it’s a dream bag from Paris or a luxe online find, prices are going up. Retailers, especially smaller resellers and international brands, now face higher costs, more paperwork, and inevitable price hikes (GASP). In short? Shopping across borders just got way more expensive—and way less fun.

So, consumers turn to resale—because surely resellers are safe, right? WRONG ‼️

  • The resale market isn’t dodging this either. With higher import costs and potential tariffs, scoring a pre-loved designer deal just got harder. Many platforms rely on global sellers, so expect prices to rise as fees stack up. Individual resellers who once shipped internationally with ease? They’re now facing more costs and red tape. Bottom line: the era of duty-free designer steals from Japan (and beyond) might be over.

That’s not soul-crushing or anything! Just a casual reminder that even our shopping carts are political. But let’s not dwell—here are some dreamy bags perfect for your summer Euro trip to Ibiza. Might as well snag them now before these changes really start to rain on our retail parade 💟 .

The Saint Laurent East West Rider Crossbody is the ultimate hands-free bag for your Euro summer—sleek, effortless, and just big enough for your Ibiza nights. Because who wants to juggle a tote when you’re dancing till sunrise?

The Prada Barrel Bag—rare, iconic, and ahead of its time. It walked so The Row 90s bag could run. I don’t know what country this seller is located in but I would bet money that it is not the US 😢. I really need to get on the barrel/boston bag style. I am itchingggggg for this silhouette to be in my closet!

I know, I know, I have made the claim to say no to denim bags but this Ferragamo is irresistible and would look fabulous at Ushaia dancing to some techno. LOOK AT THAT ROPE STRAP IT IS SCREAMING Y2K EURO SUMMER!!!!

Keeping it in the funky fam, this Chloe Drew bag is a perfect contrast to the Mediterranean blue. The Paddington is having a revival so it is only a matter of time that we see the Drew be revived as well.

Second to last we have this coquette number from Dior. It is classic and timeless but a bit fun with that pop of pink! Perfect for the euro summer raves. Plus finding Dior for sub $700 is kind of crazy!

The best for last (IMO) Prada Nappa Gold Grommet Mini is pure Y2K perfection—soft black leather meets bold gold hardware for the ultimate mix of edgy and luxe. This mini is proof that good things (and great bags) come in small packages. I saw this at TRR a few weeks ago with a friend for a whopping $800. I have never purchased from depop so do your own research (though this looks to be a TRR posting) but I will be adding this bag to my regular search rotation.

  • Determined to find it for <$400 so I CAN actually take it to Ibiza this summer so shout if you see it!!!!!!
